A Global Registry of Lunar Objects and Activities

Project Contributors: Samuel Jardine, Rachel williams, eric cremer | Project Advisor: Jonathan Mcdowell

Working to enhance lunar mission coordination through transparent tracking and reporting of space objects and activities.

Open Lunar Impact

The Lunar Registry Project is a cornerstone initiative aimed at fostering information sharing, cooperation, and transparency among lunar actors. With over 30 confirmed missions involving 15 space agencies and 20+ private companies, the registry provides a neutral mechanism to address the growing need for coordination as activity in cisLunar space expands.

About the Project

The Lunar Registry is designed to be a comprehensive database of lunar objects and activities. It will serve as a resource for mission planners, operators, governments, private companies, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and financial entities. By establishing a standard for information sharing, the registry aims to clarify lunar activities, improve coordination, and reduce operational risks.

The Need

The absence of reliable data on lunar activities creates significant risks for increasingly complex cisLunar operations. Current governance mechanisms and international coordination frameworks lag behind the pace of lunar exploration, leaving gaps in regulation, safety, and operational efficiency. As activity on the Moon intensifies, including geopolitical competition and resource extraction, these issues will become more pressing. The projected surge in cisLunar activity by 2030 highlights the need for a robust system to manage conflicts, ensure safety, and promote collaboration.

About the Solution

The Lunar Registry offers:

  • An independent, voluntary reporting system accessible to all lunar actors.]

  • Neutral, open-access resources to enhance coordination and transparency across stakeholders.

  • Capabilities to track activities and objects associated with lunar missions, accommodating the unique operating constraints of cisLunar space.

By fostering transparency and cooperation, the Lunar Registry aims to support sustainable and responsible lunar exploration.
